Department History
The Department of Internal Medicine is one of the major clinical departments that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of acute, chronic and complicated non-surgical diseases among adults.
The department was first established in the 1970s as a small unit in the then Specialist Hospital, staffed by experienced General Practitioners (GPs).
In 2010, when the hospital was transformed into a Teaching Hospital, the department expanded to initially two teams (Team A and Team B), each headed by a Consultant Physician. Over time, the department expanded further and now consists of seven specialty-based teams.

• Team C – Pulmonology / Respiratory Medicine
• Team D – Neurology
• Team E – Cardiology
• Team F – Nephrology
• Team G – Endocrinology
Services
The department runs specialty clinics from Monday to Thursday in the Medical Out-Patient Department (MOPD) which is equipped with seven consulting rooms, nursing staff and dedicated equipment.
The department also works with the Emergency Medicine Department to run the emergency unit. It collaborates with several departments including:
• Microbiology
• Chemical Pathology
• Histopathology
• Haematology
• Molecular Genetics and Infectious Diseases Laboratory (MOGID)
• Psychiatry
• Radiology
These collaborations support the residency training programme and also provide clinical care for patients.
The department also operates the following facilities:
• Side laboratory for urgent investigations
• Cardiology laboratory
• Respiratory laboratory
• Electroencephalography (EEG) laboratory
• Endoscopy unit
Department Structure
The Department of Internal Medicine is composed of the following wards:
• Male Medical Ward – 46 beds
• Female Medical Ward – 44 beds
• Drug Resistant Tuberculosis Ward – 20 beds
• Infectious Diseases Treatment Centre (IDTC) – 90 beds
The IDTC manages infectious diseases such as Lassa Fever, Diphtheria, Yellow Fever, and other infectious disease outbreaks.
The centre has:
• 27 beds for suspected cases
• 63 beds for confirmed patients
