Department History
The Department of Chemical Pathology at the College of Medical Sciences, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, was established as part of the university's commitment to advancing medical education, laboratory medicine, and clinical research in Nigeria. Since the commencement of undergraduate medical training in the department in 2020, the department has played a central role in teaching medical biochemistry and clinical chemical pathology to medical students, integrating basic science principles with clinical application to support evidence-based patient care.
From its inception, the department has focused on delivering structured academic programs, practical laboratory training, and clinical exposure aimed at equipping future physicians with a strong understanding of metabolic diseases, laboratory diagnostics, and interpretation of biochemical investigations. Through dedicated teaching, mentorship, and curriculum development, the department has successfully trained and graduated four sets of medical students and is currently engaged in training the fifth cohort.
In addition to undergraduate education, the department continues to contribute to clinical service delivery, research activities, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the College of Medical Sciences and affiliated teaching hospital. As it grows, the Department of Chemical Pathology remains committed to excellence in medical education, innovation in laboratory medicine, and the advancement of healthcare outcomes in Bauchi State and beyond.
